So you read “Side Hustle: Get Ya Money Up!” and you’re wondering exactly how to turn your great idea into some cash dollars, right. Well, SistaGirlz I have the perfect book for you: Kimberly Seals-Allers’ Mocha Manual to turning your passion into profit.
Seals-Allers Mocha Manual Brand is targeted at Black women and especially Black mothers. Her first book The Mocha Manual’s Guide to a Fabulous Pregnancy really targets the African American mom to be, whether you are single or married. It gives great information on what to expect out of your pregnancy, how to deal with your husband or “baby daddy,” as well as ways to keep you sexy and sassy as your belly grows to enormous proportions. FYI, SistaGirlz it was given to me by a good friend of mine, who had a 1 year old at the time, to read while I was pregnant. I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a must read for all pregnant Black women out there.
The second book, The Mocha Manual to turning your passion into profit, really gives the reader some great advice on how to market and brand yourself, what stumbling blocks to look out for, and showcases successful Black women entrepreneurs. It also provides a list of great resources in the appendix of the book. You can even supplement your reading with her brand new website that has tips for moms to be, mompreneurs, money management, etc. FYI, I also read this book because, well, I do have a side hustle or two. Plus, I enjoyed the first book’s writing style and the fact that it was specifically written for me. I found such good information in it. It has almost become a reference book for me. I go back and re-read sections just to make sure I’m keeping my head on straight or to get extra encouragement.
It really helps to get all the information you can, so for any SistaGirlz seriously considering going into business for yourselves pick it up today and tell me what you think!

Bestselling author Carleen Brice is back with a haunting tale of family secrets and revelations in Children of the Waters.
Trish Taylor’s white ancestry never got in the way of her love for her black ex-husband, or their mixed race son, Will. But when Trish’s marriage ends, she returns to her family’s Denver, Colorado home to find a sense of identity and connect to her past.
What she finds there shocks her to the very core: her mother and newborn sister were not killed in a car crash as she was told. In fact, her baby sister, Billie Cousins, is now a grown woman; her grandparents had put her up for adoption, unwilling to raise the child of a black man. Billie, who had no idea she was adopted, wants nothing to do with Trish until a tragedy in Billie’s own family forces her to lean on her surprisingly supportive and sympathetic sister. Together they unravel age-old layers of secrets and resentments and navigate a path toward love, healing, and true reconciliation.

St. Louis native Lyah Beth Leflore is back on the scene with her latest release! She has teamed up with her mom, well known poet Shirley Leflore, for her new book Wildflowers.
Here’s the synopsis:
Twenty-three dollars and eleven cents–that’s all that thirty-five-year-old Chloe Davis Michaels has to her name after she is driven from her home and career as a jet-setting Hollywood publicist, desperate to protect her unborn child from her crazed newlywed husband. She thought she had it all. Now Chloe seeks refuge in her Midwestern hometown to “get prayed up” by the women in her family.
Chloe’s impromptu homecoming takes us into the world of eight African-American women who make up the Davis clan–three mothers and five daughters, including Chloe, who soon discovers that the secrets she’s been keeping about her own life don’t compare to the secrets the other women in her family have been hiding.
As the bonds of family are tested, the women call upon their strong faith and spiritual teachings of deceased family matriarchs, MaMaw and Muh, in order to weather the storm.

Beyond Gumbo by Jessica B. Harris

On a trip down to my basement to unload the dryer, my ADD took over and I went looking for a new good book to read. I have hundreds of books randomly filed on wooden book cases. Wedged in between James Patterson and Terri McMillan was my copy of Beyond Gumbo: Creole Fusion Food from the Atlantic Rim by Jessica B. Harris. I had received the book as a part of it’s initial promotional book lauch, and was intrigued by the recipes. I loved Creole food, but I’d never tried to cook the it! Somehow it got placed on the bookshelf in my house instead of the kitchen.
Since I have recently discovered it and I have made plans to add a few of the recipes to my pre-Thanksgiving test fest. I will be testing new recipes to be added to my normal Turkey Day meal. Flipping through the pages makes my mouth water: Scallop Cebiche (Peru), Mashed Sweet Potatoes with Pineapple (USA) and more culturally diverse food. I’m heading to the kitchen to discover the world through food! I’ll let you know how my trip goes!
Jessica B. Harris is a Brooklyn, NY based author whose works focus on food and foodways in the African Diaspora.
Review Part II: Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man

Well, I hope you got the gist of what the book is all about. I sure have and I think it’s a decent book. A lot of it is common sense, but he did have some great pointers. Such as men are simple and the main reason they do most things is to impress women. Also, when they ask a woman for her number, they’re usually thinking of how much to invest and how fast can this woman sleep with me. This week’s chapters reviewed are: “Why Men Cheat,” “The 90 Day Sex Rule,” and “The Five Questions You Should Ask A Man Before You Get Too Deep.”
Why Men Cheat
- Because they can.
- They think they can get away with it… like by having two phones or lying about their cheating.
- The biggest reason: There’s a woman out there willing to cheat with him. There are so many women willing to give themselves up to a man who doesn’t belong to them.
The 90 Day Sex Rule
You should hold out the “cookies” for 90 days if you are dating someone. Steve points out that the rule showcases your willpower and he asks, “Where are the guys you slept with less than 90 days?”…”Nowhere!”
During those 90 days you can really get to know him without sexual activity hindering your perspective.
Waiting does matter. Don’t think he’s going out and having sex with other women. Men do like to wait because that shows you have class.
Stay focus and do things together: church, picnic, sexy Latin dance class, or a family barbeque.
The 5 Questions You Must Ask Your Potential Man Are:
-
What are your short-term goals? – These are the key elements that make a man.
-
What are your long term goals? – If he has a vision than you will see it and if you don’t agree with his long term goals than you guys make not work.
-
What are your views on relationships- Open, long term, long distance, etc.
-
What do you think about me? He most likely will say your cool, funny etc…
-
How do you FEEL about me? – This must be a deep answer… “I think about you when you’re not next to me… I pray for you…”
Now, that you’ve learned most of the rules go BUY THE BOOK and good luck on finding a great guy!
Review: Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man

Apparently, May is the time of year when people break-up. This must have some truth to it because so far I have had at least 2 friends break up with their significant other after a year or more relationship and I have also cut ties with some particular beau’s myself in May. I think it’s because you don’t want anyone to hold you back from “doing you” during the summer.
So, I wanted to better my “game” for next season and I wondered what book out there would have some good tips and ideas. I don’t know about you, but I have heard so much about the new Steve Harvey book, “Act Like A Lady, Think Like A Man.” In case you have been living under a rock – the main theme of this book is to know how men act towards women they want and those they don’t want so that women don’t get played. I just had to read the book myself and tell my SistaGirlz if it has some great tips for relationships and is worth buying. Here are some key points so far and in the following week I will give you the rest of the book. I want to break it up for you so you can learn little by little.
A man does 3 things for the woman he loves: Provide, Protect, and Profess.
If he isn’t doing one of the three, then you may not be the main one or the woman he truly loves.
A man wants these 3 things from the woman he loves: Support, Loyalty, and the “Cookie” or sex.
If you are withholding any one of these from him, he will try to get it somewhere else. “The cookie” is hard to explain because a woman can be a virgin, celibate, or it could be the early stage of her dating. However, if you have always slept with him and you suddenly stop because of your insecurities or his sexual appeal he may look for someone to fulfill his needs.
Are you a Keeper or a sports fish? This was one of the most interesting chapters in the book. Steve talks about when men fish they choose which fish they want to keep, cook, and show everyone they got a nice fish. The other fish are fish they throw back into the water.
A woman who takes a man’s number but doesn’t give him her own is a keeper; a woman who hands out all her info is a throwback.
A woman who shows her appreciation for all that you do is a keeper; a woman who acts like nothing you do is good is a throwback.
A woman whom a man can introduce to his friends and family is a keeper; a woman he doesn’t even bother introducing to his friends or family is a throwback.
If he takes down your number and waits more than 24 hours he’s sports fishing. Because if he calls you right away he is genuinely interested in you and he may want a keeper. (This may work for someone older than 25. Most young guys do the 3-7 rule to not seem like a stalker or desperate.
If you never met his friends, family, co-workers, or any one that may be important to him then he is sports fishing.
If he wants an open relationship and doesn’t mind if you see other people then is definitely sports fishing. If he wants you to be exclusive then he considers you a keeper.
So far, the book has been more relevant to women who are ready for a relationship and are tired of childish games. However, if you are not ready for a relationship you may just take some of the pointers to attract better men for “open relationships.” Next week chapter reviews are, “Why Men Cheat,” “The 90 Day Sex Rule” and “The Five Questions You Should Ask a Man Before You Get Too Deep.”

I know we’re all reading our book of the month, Push; however, I’m done and will put my review in next week. So in the interim I have been reading a new book entitled, Practicing the Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle.
If you’re like me and your mind seems to be racing all the time, this is the book for you! I’m not even done with it, but its life-changing I tell you. It is an awakening to how to live in the present! I believe this is the key to success, peace and happiness. Of course, there will always be trials and tribulations because that’s life. But if you can actually practice what he is suggests in the book and mix this with your spiritual journey, I believe you will be on your way. I’m on my way and it feels good!
