Keitha Nelson Williams Brings You the News!

Keitha Nelson Williams was born in Jamaica, West Indies but raised in New York City. Having been an athlete all her life she thought that she would make a career of track and field. However, once she got to college she realized that wasn’t going to work out for her, so after taking a couple of broadcasting classes and liking it she decided to pursue a mass communication degree.keitha22
Upon graduation from Nicholls State University she returned home to a job at a local paper, but she quickly realized that print journalism wasn’t for her. She then went back to the south for a job with a local t.v. station. She’s worked for several stations, but is now a reporter for WAFB Channel 9 in Baton Rouge, LA.
She says the most interesting and challenging story she’s ever covered was Hurricane Katrina. She moved to Biloxi one week before the hurricane devastated the Gulf Coast region. She recalls living at the TV station with the crew and their families and pets without any running water. “It was very trying,” she said. “Most of the time the stories are removed from me…but this time I was living it.”
The most rewarding part of her job is when people are helped because of a story she’s done. For instance if there was a fire and a family loses everything, she covers the story, and then later someone calls in to the station to offer the family clothing or food.
Keitha’s plans for the future include becoming a national correspondent and starting a family. Recently married, she says she’s not rushing either goal. She’s a go with the flow kind of person and when it happens it happens.
When asked if she had any advice for you Sistagirlz out there who may be thinking of following in her footsteps she replied, “Intern! Intern! Intern!” It’s important to figure out if this is really what you want to do. People think it’s fun because you’re on TV, but being a reporter is very hard work. You have to enjoy it.

The main topic of discussion lately is…. THE ECONOMY!!! Everyone has been or knows someone personally who has been affected by the recession. I myself recently was downsized in a company that I worked at for three years. It completely blindsided me because as most people I had the mindset that “it won’t happen to me.” I am a college student that is neck high in debt from school loans. I was depressed and nervous about the future. Luckily, I have gained a new perspective on the situation and now have figured out a new strategy.
In college, I am apart of an organization called American Women in Radio and Television. We took a trip to Washington DC for seminars and I would like impart some information I gained from the experience that may help others in their financial crises. With trying to gain a job and keeping a job you must create and maintain a brand. Branding yourself has contributed to many people’s success. Like with product branding, an idea of classification comes in association to identify that person. Find a brand and stay true to that identity. Also if you don’t create your own brand and image someone else will. It is a thought process many people don’t keep in mind. Especially searching for a job, you are the product that you want that potential employer to buy.
When marketing yourself you must follow three major steps 1)Be confident 2) Know your Voice 3) Stand for something. Confidence is the first and maybe the most important step to marketing yourself. Fear is not an excuse to not go for the job you want or to ask for that promotion you feel you deserve. Know everyone will not always like you. Regret for not taking action is far worst than the disappointment of rejection. With confidence these trials will seem minimal and you will welcome the challenge to inch closer to your future goals.
Although this is a hard time for a lot of people, you must remember that some of the greatest moments came during times of adversity. In this conference I learned major enterprises like MTV, USA Today, and CNN was spawned during some of the worst financial down currents. So you should always try to see the silver lining. Be flexible and be open to change.
The main people who will suffer from the economy will be
1) Unconnected- people who isolate themselves and have very small networks
2) Idealistic- their expectations do not meet their ability to accomplish them
3) Technology challenged- we are in an age of technology. Not changing with the time, you will get left behind
4) Learned helplessness- playing the victim and not rising above the situation
5) Passive aggressive- not being vocal or proactive in what you want

This trip was very eye opening and helpful in not only my current job search but have instilled positive habits and life teachings. The most important message I gained from this informative conference is being silent and not standing out of the crowd is the most detrimental approach you can take to your career. Standing out and being confident in who you are and what you know can make the difference from standing in the unemployment line and working towards your goals.

doodlebra  I didn’t know what to make of this product when I first heard of it.  The Doodle Bra. What in the LL COOJ?  I know that we are in a recession and folks are putting their minds to use and coming up with different inventions, but The Doodle Bra? I had to find out more info!

I was thinking to myself, what grown woman in her right mind is gonna be coloring on a bra? I mean, I’ve heard folks say that coloring is therapeutic, but on my brassiere? That’s another story.  So, I decided take a look at the website and see what’s what.

Well, according to their page, this doodle bra is supposed to help provide teens and young women with entertainment and self-expression. Hmmm. Their exact words were “empowering young girls to be comfortable with their sexuality…” Hu?  I still don’t get it! LOL!  But if you’re in the market for a new bra, might want to skip Vickie’s and head on over to the Doodle Bra site.  They prices start around $12 and they have a “training cami” for girls as young as five. It even comes with stencils and non-toxic markers. LOL! You know what SistaGirlz?  We should have our own Doodle Bra party! Now, please let me know if you would actually buy a product like this.  Shoot, this might be an untapped market!

Why is it that plus size women have  problems finding decent style clothes? Or maybe that’s just from my experience. I am a plus size women and have a very difficult time finding fashion to my liking. I live in Jersey City, NJ and there are a couple of malls, but its like they are getting rid of the plus size stores and putting in the “Itty Bitty Girl store” lol. I mean, there a couple of stores but its mostly casual clothes and “dressy clothes”. Its kinda hard to find a store for plus size that has everyday clothes. Unless you go out of state or somewhere in far off land, it’s hard to find decent plus size clothes. The other day, I was looking for a jacket and all I kept running into was the “Itty Bitty Girl stores”. I have come to the conclusion that me, myself will now order off line.

Ladies in this present day we are bombarded with the ill effects of society, the economy and little things that easily offset our days, From Bad traffic, an angry boss, disobedient children to the rude cashier at the store poppin’ her gum and rolling her eyes at you like your wasting HER time! When faced with these daily objections you can still be overcomers and come out on top! You have the power to Choose Your Disposition. The greatest control you have in life is Self Control! You are totally responsible for self and how you act or react to what others do to you. When someone does something ill to you and you allow your emotions and actions to dictate your attitude and feelings, you’ve at that point surrendered yourself to
that person or thing that made you upset. Any person capable of angering you gains control of you, because they can only anger you when you allow yourself to be angered by them!
I choose to be happy in any situation. I am responsible for me. Nobody knows me better than me, so why give someone else the power to choose how I feel?
So I choose to smile, and be happy which ultimately makes my outcome brighter! What’s your disposition???

The Hottest Book Ever! Midnight is BACK!

Who hasn’t heard or read The Coldest Winter Ever. In high school everyone had Sister Souljah fever and if you didn’t have the book you were on your way to get it. The childhood story of Winter captured and intrigued many of us. I have recently been reacquainted with the Sister Souljah movement. If you loved The Coldest Winter Ever you will love Sister Souljah’s newest release, Midnight, A Gangster’s Love Story. Her return to the book game has been highly anticipated, but hearing many of the people who have read the book, says it was well worth it.
dominiquesisouljahMidnight is a prequel that has rocked the bestseller list for the past few weeks. The book delves deeper into the life of a major and one of the favorite characters in The Coldest Winter Ever, Midnight. If you know anything about Sister Souljah and her writing this book will have you on the edge of your seat the whole way. Not only giving you entertainment but having insightful lessons that the reader can take away to use in their lives. Sister Souljah actually went on the records and said this is her favorite book to date.

Midnight is a handsome charming African man. With his traditional mind-set and street smarts he is on his way to build his empire. In the hard streets of Brooklyn, Midnight makes a name for himself coming up through the ranks of the lucrative illicit world that thrives on his block. With the trials and tribulations that comes from his search for the green, he also becomes wrapped up in his love story.

Sister Souljah has become a legend from her books. Recently she was in New Jersey and I had to go see this woman that has inspired so many people. She spoke about her personal life. She discussed how as a child she was loved the library and the first book she read was about Harriet Tubman. I was captivated by her the entire time not missing a word that came from her mouth. Even her name that may seem so simple has such a deep meaning to her. She wanted to emphasize her femininity but her strong will at the same time. She also wanted to incorporate her spirituality. So she named herself Sister Soldier but spelled it souljah. Jah means God. She says literally her name means “she is fighting to find the essence of God.”

My friend who came with me asked her the question, what advice can you give us, as young woman, to help us reach our goals. She summed it up by saying we all should have a personal constitution. The personal constitution entails, “what you will do, what you won’t do, and what you have to do.” Also you have to know, “what you will die for, what you live for, and what you will kill.” If I only remember one thing from her book signing, this will be it.

Oprah School Scandal, Destiny’s Child Reunion? & More!

Oprah Winfrey’s South African Leadership Academy was once again hit with a SCANDAL!  It seems several students were suspended due to “alleged sexual impropriety”.  One 15 year old student was said to be “preying” on a girl and others had “intimidated other girls into behaving inappropriately.” Wow! Oprah was just trying to do some good! Dang!   Oprah issued a statement regarding the matter:

“I’m disappointed that several of our students chose to disregard the school’s rules. It’s disheartening when any student has to be suspended or expelled and it’s a process that involves serious review and consideration. We will not tolerate a violation of school policy and dishonesty. We insist on maintaining a campus environment that commands mutual respect, fosters academic excellence and encourages learners to fulfill their best potential.”

Oprah’s school was also hit with a sex scandal back in November 20007.
